  1. Lay 8 slices of bread on a work surface.
  2. Place 2 slices of American cheese on each of 4 of the bread slices.
  3. Top each with a second bread slice to form 4 sandwiches.
  4. Brush the top of each sandwich lightly with melted butter.
  5. Brush the bottom of each sandwich lightly with melted butter.
  6. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat (about 350°F on an electric griddle).
  7. Place as many sandwiches as fit in a single layer in the hot skillet, working in two batches if they do not all fit.
  8. Grill until golden brown on the bottom, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  9. Flip each sandwich.
  10. Grill until golden brown on the second side and the cheese is melted, about 2 to 3 minutes more.
  11. Remove the sandwiches from the skillet.
  12. Cut each sandwich in half.
  13. Serve immediately while hot.
